Spring is finally in the air in Buenos Aires. The trees are turning green, the people are coming out from hibernation and the city is starting to feel alive again with that fun, summer buzz that we all know and love. Although there’s a lot to be said about Autumn/Winter fashion it’s always nice to shed the layers, put the leather boots to the back of the wardrobe and step out in less clothing. The question is what should you be wearing this season? Here are our top five fashion tips.
WHITE IS THE NEW BLACK
White is the IT colour of the season. It was one of the hottest hues on the runway during BAF Week, as seen in the collections of designers of the moment BlackMamba, Benitez Emilse and Luz Ballestero. Keep it pure and simple with a head-to-toe white color scheme, whether it’s a classic white shirt and trouser combination (with matching white clutch) or a floaty feminine white summer dress and white sandals. You’ll be surprised at the impact it makes. If all white is too much white then mix it up with a bit of cream or nude or a pop of bright color in your shoes or accessories.
If it’s not white, it’s black and white. It’s a winning combination this season that gives off an air of elegance and sophistication. Black and white stripes, a trend that’s been carried over from Autumn/Winter are still being seen across blazers, shirts or leggings along with graphic monochrome prints splashed across a mod 60s dress or simple black and white separates combined. Finish the look with a pair of oversized Audrey Hepburn-style shades.
Let your trousers do the talking. Silky printed pants that could be mistaken for pajamas have made an appearance in many a designer’s new collection this season. They’re chic and playful and, best of all, they’re comfortable. You’ve got a wide choice of prints and cuts to choose from too, from animal print to bold florals, jungle, ethnic and tribal patterns in fitted drain pipe or more wide-legged billowy styles. If your pants are going to be making the statement, stick to a neutral or solid colored top and shoes.
Frida Kahlo rocked the flowers-in-your-hair trend back in the day and flower headbands have made a huge comeback this year. They were a staple in the music festival goers wardrobe in Europe this past summer and now they’re appearing on the heads of many a fashionista in Buenos Aires. They add a boho summery touch to your outfit whether you go all out with a big floral bouquet crown or stick to a more subtle rose bud hairband. We particularly like the cute floral headwear by Los Tesoras de Simona but you could also go out and buy a bunch of your favorite artificial silk flowers and do it yourself.
Last year’s obsession with the crop top is back once more with even more power than last year. Okay, so you need some washboard abs to pull it off but that’s not impossible to achieve and there are ways to wear a crop top to minimize the midriff exposure. Try pairing it with a pair of high-waisted jeans or a maxi skirt. Incidentally, if you are looking to tone up your tum for the summer, we personally recommend Cassey Ho’s Blogilates workout videos that will burn your abs into shape (and believe us, you will feel the burn).
