Sasha: Great Pastries in Recoleta Posted on 22 Feb 00:30 , 0 comments
I was on my way to an event and my arms were full or packages to deliver. I picked up a taxi on the busy corner next to my street and told him my destination.
“Vamos.” He replied as he drove off.
“Vamoooooos”, I confirmed, in my imitation Argentine accent.
The cab driver laughed. He was one of those people with a cheery countenance and his laugh was deep and sincere.
“Oh, look at you, picking up a little Spanish!” He teased me.
“After three years. I’m just finally beginning to learn!” I joked back.
“Just take more taxi rides!” He retorted.
You don’t have to tell me twice. “I learned all of my Spanish in taxi cabs!”
“Viste?!” The driver laughed jovially. “Viste how you can learn Spanish!”
I played: “Well, por lo menos, I learned how to chamuyar.”
The driver laughed so hard that I wondered if it was safe for him to be driving.
“You learned how to chamuyar from talking with taxi drivers!”
“Si, and now, viste, I am la mas chamuyera de todas.”
“Three years! That is a long time. What do you like about Buenos Aires?” He asked me.
“Besides the chamuyo? Hmmmm …” I thought about it. “Sabes que? I like the facturas.”
“Ay Dios! Facturas!” The driver let out a roaring laugh. “You’re living here for the bread!”
“Tal cual. I Just love the smell of freshly baking bread in the morning. I love that there is a bakery on every corner, and each is better than the last! I love those flaky medialunas, or even better when you can find giant croissants. I love the pastries that are filled with vanilla custard, or some sort of fruit, like canned peaches or apples, or filled with dulce de leche. Mmmm and when they have that sticky clear glaze, that’s the best.”
“Hija, you have to go to Sasha. Sasha has the best facturas in all of Recoleta. They have medialunas and french pastries and they even have cinnamon rolls with raisins. and bigger cinnamon rolls with walnuts, dripping with melted icing.” The cab driver told me.
So you live in Buenos Aires for the facturas then, too?” I teased.
We laughed all the way to the destination. He handed me my change and I exited the vehicle with all of my many packages in hand.
“Cuidate, hija!” He called after me. “No olvidas, andate a este lugar, Sasha! Y seguis chamuyando!”Sasha Juncal 2110 4823.3745
