Hom Espumante Extra Brut Posted on 04 Sep 01:10 , 0 comments

While Argentina is famously celebrated for its Malbec varietals, thanks to Anuva Wines, I recently sampled a fantastic sparkling white wine from the Mendoza region of Argentina.  It was a 2009 bottle of Hom Espumante Extra Brut.

The winery – Cava la Carmela has been treating Argentina to it’s sparkling wines since 2002 and is located in the Lujan de Cujo, Mendoza wine region. They have an annual production of 35,000 bottles.

My amiga Ameesha and I decided to have an official tasting.

First we looked at the color – a translucent creamy yellow with tiny flecks of gold.

Then we smelled.  The primary scents were distinctly of pear and green apple.

Then we tasted.  The tiny bubbles were crisp and delicate on the palate, the taste leaving the slightest hint of sweetness and delicate aromas of hazelnuts and honey.

We decided that a sparkling wine with such beautiful tiny bubbles deserved to be paired with nothing less than chocolate covered strawberries.  The fructose sweetness of the berries really brought out a well rounded flavor in the wine.  The sensation of melting chocolate, crisp berries and bubbly wine was a treat for our taste buds.

If dessert isn’t your thing, the wine would also pair nicely with fish, salad, or cheese.

You can purchase a bottle (or a case!) and have it shipped to you – check here.
